What happens at the ends of proteins can determine their fate – but protein termini are increasingly emerging as much more than molecular tags for protein stability and degradation. At the FEBS (Federation of European Biochemical Societies) Workshop “Protein Termini 2026” in Italian Palermo, 152 scientists discussed how protein termini connect translation, protein maturation, proteostasis, signalling and stress responses with emerging therapeutic and biotechnological applications. Plant research is making fundamental contributions to this rapidly evolving field. Co-organiser Prof. Dr Nico Dissmeyer, reports about latest scientific developments and new perspectives. Several items on the agenda served as stepping stones for early career scientists (ECRs).
