From 17^th to 19^th September 155 participants including 40 from abroad met at Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, Germany, to discuss latest progress in evolution, speciation, dispersal biology, ontogeny, plant ecology and population history, data sharing, legal regulations of research, as well as plant conservation strategies. The advantages and techniques of Next Generation Sequencing were thoroughly discussed and promising young scientists were awarded with prices. A congress Report by Professor Joachim W. Kadereit

According to our poll many of the DBG members are collaborating with partners working in the USA (41%), France (24%) or Great Britain (19%). Almost every tenth works together with scientists from Australia, Spain, the Netherlands or Austria (10% each) as well as Switzerland (9%) or Sweden (7%; multiple answers were possible). Some are cooperating internationally with partners from Germany (11%), presumably members of the DBG who aren’t residents (cannot be verified since the poll was carried out anonymously). More than 388 members have participated in the survey done in March and April 2012 and contributed to the data shown in the map above. This means a response rate of almost 45% of all members who were assessed either by electronic mail or by post.

The scientists who met at the conference discussed many topics around Chlamydomonas research concerning physiology, genetic tools and biofuels, and enjoyed special lectures on flagellar functions, crystals and light perception. Erstmals hat die Gesellschaft eine themenbezogene Gruppe AFGN (Arabidopsis Functional Genomics Network) eingerichtet, die die verschiedenen Forschungen an der Modellpflanze Ackerschmalwand (Arabidopsis thaliana) bündelt. Die vom Tübinger Pflanzenphysiologen Prof. Dr. Klaus Harter koordinierte Gruppe vernetzt ihre Mitglieder über eine Website, veranstaltet Tagungen, engagiert sich in übergeordneten Komitees und dokumentiert die weltweite Forschung.

Develpoment and Priorities of Upcoming Analyses

The meeting attracted over 180 academia and industry participants from 45 different countries. They reviewed state of the art and progress in the knowledge base underlying plant development, in particular its growth, responses to nutrition and environment and to set research priorities for the next era of studies. Auch dieses Jahr fördert die DBG ausländische Studierende, die einer hiesigen Doktorandin oder einem Doktoranden zur Hand gehen. Organisiert wird der Austausch, bei dem Nordamerikanische und Britische Studierende in deutsche Hochschulen und pflanzenwissenschaftliche Labore schnuppern, vom Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienst (DAAD). In diesem „Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE)“ genannten Programm koordiniert der DAAD die Zusammenführung der Doktoranden-Praktikanten-Paare und erstellt das Ranking unter den eingegangenen Bewerbungen. Drei dieser Stipendien in diesem Jahr finanziert wieder die DBG.

Seit erstem Januar arbeitet der Vorstand der Gesellschaft in teilweise neuer Besetzung. Zu den acht schon länger amtierenden Vorstandsmitgliedern kommen seit Anfang des Jahres drei neue Pflanzenwissenschaftler, die während der Botanikertagung vergangenen September gewählt wurden: Professor Dr. Karl-Josef Dietz ist der neue Präsident der Gesellschaft, Dr. Thomas Janssen ist der neue Schriftführer und Professor Dr. Ralf R. Mendel ist neues Mitglied im erweiterten Vorstand.
