Monumental six-volume "Chemotaxonomy"
Robert Hegnauer's work on phytochemistry is world-renowned. He has covered the entire field comprehensively in his monumental six-volume "Chemotaxonomie of Plants". And he especially worked in specialized areas of alkaloids, glycosinolates, and phenolics.
Robert Hegnauer was Professor emeritus of the University of Leiden, Netherlands. Born in 1919 he finished his PhD Thesis in 1948 in Zürich, Switzl and, and in 1952 he was appointed professor for " pharmacognosie en galenische pharmacie" of the University of Leiden, Netherlands.
In 1971 he became an honorary doctor by the ETH Zurich, Swizerland, and in 1987 by the University of Utrecht, Netherlands.
Honored and awarded Scientist
Professor Hegnauer holds several honorary and corresponding memberships, namely, in the American Society of Pharmacognosy, the Society for Medicinal Plant Research, and the German Botanical Society. He is a life member of The Phytochemical Society of Europe and in 1976 he received the Fluck Medal of the Pharmaceutical Institute of the Federal Technical University , Zurich . He also received the PSE-Medal from the Phytochemical Society and the Egon-Stahl-Preis in Gold from the Society for Medicinal Plant Research at Amsterdam, Netherlands. On April 14th in 2007 Hegenauer died at the age of 87.
