Visible symbiosis between fungus and plant

The arbuscular mycorrhizae are stained in pink. Arbuscls are parts of the fungus (hyphens) living within the cells of the plant's root. Both exchange metabolites and foster each other: The fungus incorporates nutrients and flurishes while the plant is portected against deseases.
The picture taken displays the fungal hyphens within the root of a barley. More than 80 % of all terrestrial plants live in arbuscular symbiosis in which the fungus invades the plant root.
